A ‘QuickWrite a Day’ #3: Emotions

"Writing can be used as a vehicle to express ourselves as we negotiate the journey through our lives” (Gallagher, 2011: p. 24)

In her book Awakening the Heart, poet Georgia Heard reminds readers that writers draw inspiration from “what’s in their hearts” and that writing from these feelings can “make order out of what often feels like chaos” and “reveal the meanings behind the confusing emotions.”

With this in mind, list or draw five feelings that you have experienced over the past week. Select one emotion from this list or drawing and write about it. If you need help to get started, you might want to consider one of the following questions:

  • What has really affected your heart this week? How?

  • What triggered this feeling?

  • What physical sensations did this feeling create in you?

  • What did it make you think, wonder or feel like doing?

  • If this feeling were a colour, what would it be and why?

  • What might this feeling taste like, smell like or sound like?
