QuickWrite of the Day #27: Letters to books, movies or albums

"Writing can be used as a vehicle to express ourselves as we negotiate the journey through our lives” (Gallagher, 2011: p. 24)

Today’s QuickWrite of the Day:

There have been a lot of book, album and movie challenges on social media lately, involving people sharing the best books, albums, movies or songs they’ve come across in their lives. Here are a few examples:

In the spirit of these challenges, quickly draw or make a list of your:

  • Top 5 best books, movies, albums or songs (your pick)

OR your:

  • Worst 5 worst books, movies, albums or songs (your pick)

Choose one of these from your list. If what you have chosen is in your ‘Top 5’ list, write a short love/appreciation letter to it, writing about the impact it’s had on you.

If you’ve picked something from your ‘Worst 5’ list, write a short break-up letter explaining why you don’t like it and need to part ways.

For inspiration, see an example of a letter to the picture story book The Giving Tree below from librarian Annie Spence (from the book Dear Fahrenheit 451: A Librarian’s Love Letters and Break-Up Notes to Her Books).
