‘A Quickwrite a Day’ #1: Grateful

My Thoughts.PNG

“Writing can be used as a vehicle to express ourselves as we negotiate the journey through our lives” (Gallagher, 2011: p. 24)

In his book Write Like This, educator Kelly Gallagher highlights how “writing can be used as a vehicle to express ourselves as we negotiate the journey through our lives” (2011: p. 24). Author Jane Yolen talks about the importance of “exercis[ing] the writing muscle every day”.

So if you or your students are looking for some short, sharp prompts to ‘write your way through’ this time that can also build writing volume and stamina, I’ll be posting a ‘QuickWrite a Day’ and invite you to take part!

It goes like this:

  • I’ll post an open-ended prompt, quote or image

  • You and/or your students reflect and respond

  • You and/or students can share your thoughts or develop them into larger pieces of writing

If you would like access to all ‘QuickWrite a Day’ prompts, they will be stored and shared on this Google Slide Deck on our ‘Resources’ page.

I’ll leave you now with this absolute ripper of a quote from a book called Write Beside Them:

What power —what importance—lies in the pages of an empty notebook. Go and fill yours. Then share.
— Penny Kittle (educator and author)

Today’s Quickwrite of the Day:

This one is inspired by children’s writer Kate Di Camillo, who posted this on her Facebook page on 26/03/2020:

Take a moment to think about something in your life right now that you are grateful for. It could be an object, an action, an activity—anything! What does it make you think, feel or wonder?
